**UPDATE: Spurs are the Champs 2007/08
It’s an all London finale in the Carling Cup as a resurgent Tottenham side take on Chelsea who are also boosted with the return of their African players and dynamic duo - Frank Lampard and John Terry.Sunday’s finalists have won the League Cup seven times between them (Chelsea 4; Tottenham 3), and appeared in ten finals (Chelsea 5; Tottenham 5).
Chelsea were winners in 1965 (3-2 on aggregate v Leicester City), 1998 (2-0 after extra-time v Middlesbrough), 2005 (3-2 after extra-time v Liverpool), and 2007 (2-1 v Arsenal). The Blues were runners-up in 1972 (1-2 v Stoke City).
Tottenham’s triumphs came in 1971 (2-0 v Aston Villa), 1973 (1-0 v Norwich City) and 1999 (1-0 v Leicester City). Spurs were beaten finalists in 1982 (3-1 after extra-time against Liverpool) and 2002 (2-1 v Blackburn Rovers).
The main talking point for Chelsea is the return of John Terry who might not feature in the final as Avram Grant has said that he is pleased with the current pair of Alex and Carvalho, however some media reports suggest that Terry and Lampard will play and it’s Ashley Cole who will miss out as he tries to sort out his private life (divorce).
Manager Grant admitted yesterday that Cole’s recent problems had caused him some concern and Wayne Bridge is expected to start ahead of his England colleague.
Bridge certainly feels he is the man in form, so much so that he is even prepared to hand in a transfer request if he does not play.
On Cole, Grant all but admitted that he had left the player out because of the upheavals in his private life.
He said: ‘I will not talk about Sunday, but I cannot say that in his difficult days I didn’t think about it. I thought about it and I even I took some decisions that were good for Ashley.’
This could also possibly be Ledley King’s final game for Spurs, the 27-year-old has missed Tottenham’s last six matches and has been wrapped in cotton wool in order to face a Chelsea side likely to be led out by John Terry.
Although King is reluctant to admit that his career could be over, Tottenham sources fear the worst after tomorrow’s final.
King’s knees are now ‘bone on bone’ and he has been told there is very little that can be done to improve the situation.
He also has a hip condition that is causing him problems. The defender, 27, is one of the most popular players at Tottenham, but there are growing fears that this could turn out to be King’s farewell appearance.
It was widely assumed that Jonathan Woodgate had been signed to play alongside King in the centre of defence, but manager Juande Ramos brought him in as King’s replacement.
My prediction
Chelsea are favourites to win this, however my money is on Spurs to lift their first silverware in a long long time, i think the hunger and experience of Juande Ramos in Cup competitions will give Spurs the edge in the end.
